Gucci, a noun so famous it moonlights as an adjective. Lower case gucci, inspired by the clothing line Gucci, represents what I will call the trifecta of fresh, fancy and flashy—ostentatious and proud to be if you will. Gucci’s overt flashiness had previously discouraged all interest in the brand for me. In my head, the amount of gold, low v neck everything, interlocking Gs everywhere, and their famous status symbol leather purses had me running for the hills. We get it—if you wear Gucci, you’re rich.
HOWEVER, three fortuitous recent events have encouraged me to make a Gucci double take.
HOWEVER, three fortuitous recent events have encouraged me to make a Gucci double take.
1. After writing about Dolce & Gabbana, I checked Sophia Amoruso’s (founder of online retailer Nasty Gal) Instagram to see if a recent dress she wore to the GIRLBOSS premiere was D&G—it was Gucci. *Crowd gasps in unison*
2. A recent screenshot on my phone I thought was Marc Jacobs was again—Gucci. (Strong ability to identify designers)

She's wearing a DOUBLE G belt to make it obvious, but we won't talk about that. The colors could be Marc Jacobs though. Anyone with me?

3. Most importantly, a recent article in Domino Magazine (such a good magazine—highly recommend) featured newlyweds Jesse Chamberlain and Jimmy Marble saying “I do,” in Gucci.

Here is the Domino article and his and her Instagram (they are both artists!—no surprise there) if you want to see for yourself. Please do and LET'S TALK about that color palette. (In advance, not sure why but the tennis balls were my favorite part??? Light pink against raspberry anyone?)
SUFFICE it to say, at 1 AM I took my phone off airplane mode (unfortunately not uncommon) and went to see what Gucci was up to.
I have discovered that Gucci’s new designer Alessandro Michele is the reason for my new love. (This is a really comprehensive and long article about Michele from the New Yorker entitled "Gucci's Renaissance man" (very telling title) —so good!). After everything I have read and seen re: Gucci, my most striking impression is of Michele himself. His eyes and face look so kind and his deep love for antiques, art, interiors, and the art of everyday life itself is quiet, humble, and strong. Humility is perhaps one of the most endearing and inspiring traits to me. To be humble is difficult to attain (although it seems to be natural for some lucky people), truly beautiful to see in practice and a great source of strength. Alessandro Michele is a man whose humility seems to come naturally to him. Here he is in all his beauty:
Gucci in the era of Michele is fun again. Alessandro Michele’s love for art of the past is nowhere more apparent than his runway looks. In an interview with the New York Times (short video, worth the watch!), Michele talks about surrounding himself with old things as a practice that makes him feel contemporary. Each outfit he designs is that mix and contradiction between past and future, vintage and modern. His runway shows are at times overwhelming to look at. Backstage images from his shows look like they could be 15 models standing for 15 different shows. This is because his style and intention are based upon the INDIVIDUAL. Cool, right? A lot of brands design for a particular type of person. I.e: “What does a Dior girl look like? What does she want to wear?” Michele, such an individual himself, creates looks for everyone. His designs acknowledge and respect us each—empowering us to be different, look different, and celebrate that. It’s a party—we're all invited.
Come join his party below! Take a look around.

This coat reminds me of something that a loving (and chic) kindergarten teacher would wear and then hug all of her students. Needless to say, I love it.

This campaign was inspired by the TV show "Freaks and Geeks". Incidentally, this is also the dress Jesse wore to her wedding. (See photos above.)

Time to take out your zoom again. Her neckline features two jewel-encrusted hands holding a bow in the center of the collar. Also, those multicolored feathers are what I want more of in my life.

I love the color of this dress and its whimsy. Fun fact: those shoes are inspired by the necessity of heels that could withstand flooding back in old Venice. The heel equivalent of waders. Zoom on in and see those levels. This dress would also be on the top of my want list.
